What is Apraxia?

Apraxia is a neurological disorder where the child may understand and be willing to execute a command or movement but have the inability to do so.

For instance tying shoes or buttoning a shirt is not possible for one with Apraxia. Apraxia is believed to be caused by a lesion in the brain.

Apraxia comes in several different forms:

• Ideomotor Apraxia: Unable to carry out a command to the brain to mimic head or limb  movements suggested by others.

• Contructional Apraxia: Very much like Ideomotor but displays a much more severe inability to understand.

• Limb-Kinetic Apraxia: inability to make exact movements

with the finger, limb, or arm.

• Buccofacial Apraxia: The inability to carry out facial or lip movements like whistling, winking, etc.

• Ideational Apraxia: Cannot develop a plan for a movement.

• Oculomotor apraxia: This condition is the difficulty with moving the eyes.
