Autism & Reading

Years of research is showing that children develop decoding and reading comprehension skills simultanious, though each skill develops independently of the other.

Kids with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) usually perform above average or average levels with decoding written language.

They tend to be better at sounding out words than understand the word or groups of words they may be reading. Due to the fact that comprehension is a more abstract skill than decoding, this may be the reason for the disconnect. It takes the reader’s sensitivity to a story , ability to pick up on referents, create ideas and conclusions by use identifying previous knowledge of a subject to makes sense of the story.
