Foundational Skills in Pediatric Occupational Therapy

Foundational skills are the basic skills that are necessary to conveying and receiving information that is critical to training and work or school success. These skills  serve as a basis—the foundation—for supporting additional operations/tasks and learning.

What are foundational literacy skills?

​

Foundational Skills. These skills include the alphabet, the concept of print, phonological awareness, phonics, high-frequency words, and fluency. These are a set of skills that children should learn before they become skillful readers.

 

Why are foundational reading skills important?

​

Systematic instruction in phonological awareness, phonics, and sight words is essential for many students. This has shown over and over to increase the pace of the student's reading development. This type of effective instruction meets students at their point of need.

 

What are foundational skills in map testing?

​

This assessment is an adaptive assessment testing skills such as letter-sounds fluency, initial sound fluency, letter knowledge (letter ID or letter naming), listening comprehension and vocabulary. There is no oral reading.
