What are Neurological Disorders in Children?

A dysfunction in any part of the brain of a child is a neurological disorder which affects the nervous system. The brain, spinal cord and nerves are a part the nervous system. Children may have difficulty with movement, speech, thinking, eating, hearing, social interaction, or a number of other symptoms.

One of the most common neurological disorders is ADHD - Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Autism, Cerebral Palsy, and more. Cerebral Palsy developed in the womb, Autism is most commonly noticed around age 3, while ADHD is age 7. Though there is no exact age these are common documented ages.

The Pediatric Occupational Therapist works with children with many neurological disorders. Evaluations and Assessments are very important in determining the type, depth, and treatment for the disorder. Never assume or label your child until you have had the opportunity to evaluate with a professional.
